PARTIMNSTR: From SoundCloud to Underground
In preparation for PARTIMNSTR 3.27, I met with the heads of PARTI COLLECTIVE to discuss their SoundCloud origin stories, love for the underground, and vision for our first official afterparti!
⭐️ Going back to the beginning, how did you two meet?
DAVYN: It was 2024 B.B. (Before BRAT), none of the songs were out, and all we had was the 20 second snippet of “Von Dutch.” I remember I was prepping for some sort of college DJ event, looking for tracks, and I came across Rob’s “Break The Rules” remix on SoundCloud.
ROB: We met on SoundCloud! Probably the only person I can ever say that about. My first ever remix posted to SoundCloud was getting some traction on there, and I got a follow from a SoCal-based radio host and DJ, NakedBB (now known as LUC111E)!
DAVYN: Then a few months later I invited him to my very first event I ever threw at a dive bar in Long Beach, and the rest is history.
⭐️ Do you remember your first time DJing together? What do you like about each other’s music style?
DAVYN: We were prepping for our first event together at Pirate Studios, and I was teaching him how to use CDJs. I think I still have the video.
ROB: Prior to meeting, I only ever practiced on my starter decks, and I had never touched a CDJ or Rekordbox before. It was also one of my first times B2Bing with anyone, and we had great chemistry from the jump!
DAVYN: Honestly our styles mesh really well — his music style reminds me of the high energy Vocaloid EDM tracks I grew up with, plus old school Deadmau5.
ROB: Davyn’s sound can only be described as an energizer bunny. She has a tendency to get into these flows with her sets that is just this addictive, nonstop groove. Any subgenre of music you can name, Davyn has not only explored it, but already found a bootleg remix from the most obscure corner of the Internet that she’ll play at her next set. She’s quick to get you moving and won’t slow it down till it’s a full-on rave.
⭐️ How did PARTIMNSTR come about?
ROB: We threw our first PARTIMNSTR ever when we hosted a club event to celebrate the release of Ryl0’s newest single, “Party Monster” in March of last year! We brought guest artists like Felipe.mp3, AOBeats, and HYRA to Los Globos to celebrate. Crazy to think that almost exactly a year later PARTIMNSTR is taking on a completely new form.
⭐️ What inspired you to throw an afters?
DAVYN: You have more control. The club scene in Los Angeles is alright but it’s also hanging from a noose (can I say that?) Like drinks are expensive, gas is expensive, no one wants to dance, the music being played is 50/50, major clubs only want to hear Top 40… it’s like it’s dying by its own hand. The underground is where culture is and where it’ll always be, and that is where I want Parti to be.
ROB: It’s so important to me that young queer people have safe space to dance that is free or low cost. While we were limited to a capacity of free RSVPs for this event, I will always continue to push for providing safe nightlife opportunities for free or at low cost to my community.
⭐️ What’s your goal with this upcoming event?
DAVYN: Create a center of culture. I love seeing people paint their faces, dress to the nines, actually sweat on the dance floor and not flop around like a ket-induced fish. I want people to dance, I want them to have fun! In 20 years, I want to be going through my photo albums, and I want my heart to be full knowing that I helped in creating a safe space for all of the people that I love and adore.
ROB: I want this event to serve as the lore and the origin story of our upcoming season. This is uncharted territory for PARTI COLLECTIVE, and we’re so excited that we will get to share this special and pivotal moment with everyone. I want us to make our mark and give it 110%, which I can proudly say our entire team is already doing.
⭐️ What, to you, makes a great party?
DAVYN: Good music and good people. I don’t care if the function is being thrown in a Subway bathroom — if good music and good people are there, I’m content. (Okay, maybe not a Subway bathroom, but you get my point).
ROB: The most important thing for any party is setting a strong foundation! If you can set the right expectations and create a safe and welcoming environment for your guests, any event can grow into something very special. The greatest parties I’ve experienced created a momentum beyond just that night; they built connections, community, lore, or at least a crazy story that won’t be quickly forgotten.
⭐️ Any last words?
DAVYN: Keep your community close! We live in extremely dark times right now, and all I’ve seen in recent years is anger and hate. It’s cliché, but this is a time to spread L.O.V.E. Support your community, show up to the functions, GO OFFLINE and BE PRESENT.
ROB: We are so beyond excited to make this event happen. If you have already bought a ticket, I can’t thank you enough for your support in making this night come to life. If you haven’t, it’s not too late to join the PARTI…
